How To Grow The Perfect Lawn

The lawn is one of the most striking features of any garden, or at least it should be. Many of us strive for grass that is green and lush but sometimes that perfect-looking lawn can be somewhat elusive. Here are some top tips for growing the perfect lawn.

Make Sure Your Blades Are Sharp

No matter what kind of lawn mower you own, if the blades aren’t sharp they won’t be much use. Dull blades will give your grass a ragged edge which turns brown much quicker than a crisp cut. Sharpening your mower blades isn’t a difficult task. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet that will show you how it’s done. It’s a couple of hour’s work which will make a huge difference to your lawn.

Trim Just the Top

Always make sure that your mower blades are set at the top or second setting. This means that you will only remove the top third of the grass when you cut it, making your lawn appear much healthier. You might have to mow very frequently in the spring, but this should slow down as the seasons progress through summer and autumn. Cutting grass too short means that you will lose too much of the energy-producing growth at the top. The other advantage of mowing little and often is that the small grass tips will easily decompose, further improving the quality of your soil.

Aerating Is as Important as Mowing

It’s not just the mowing that will keep your lawn in tip-top condition. Aeration at least twice a year is equally important for a luscious-looking lawn. Ideally, you should aerate your lawn twice a year to keep it looking lovely. The best times to do this are in March and October. Simply don some aerator sandals and walk over your lawn. It will help the air get right down to the roots. This in turn will enable the nutrients and water to get right where they are needed.

Scarify the Thatch

While a few short grass clippings can work wonders in getting nutrients into your lawn, too much will leave it looking dull and lifeless. It’s known as “thatch” and the best way to get rid of this old, brown grass is to rake it out with a scarifier. Removing the dead stuff will give your lawn more room to grow.

Feed and Water Regularly

Of course, feeding and watering your lawn regularly is very important too. Watering should be done as and when it’s needed, but the best-looking lawns need feeding on a regular basis. Organic lawn-care products are usually best as they will work with the surrounding environment without putting anything nasty into the ecosystem.

If all this sounds like a lot of hard work, especially if your lawn is small, you could always choose an artificial alternative instead. Dayco Artificial Grass has some incredibly realistic solutions if you want a lawn that looks great all year round with minimal upkeep.
